What they didn’t realize was that a photo is often the single heaviest thing on the page and the slowest part to load. It is also invisible to Google’s image search and to the AI tools more people now ask before they ever click. None of that shows up in a way you’d notice. The page looks fine. It just quietly underperforms.
Here’s the honest version up front, because a lot of SEO advice oversells this. Image size is not some giant lever that rockets you to the top of Google. However, Google has said plainly that the speed signals tied to your images are lightweight compared to relevance. But “lightweight ranking signal” undersells the real cost, because bad images hurt you in more places than one. They slow your page down, they make it jump around as it loads, they keep you out of image search, and, when they are poorly described, they stay invisible to the AI tools people increasingly search with. Fix them and you help all four, and the fixes are genuinely easy.

Images Are the Heaviest Thing on Your Page
Your images are almost certainly the largest chunk of what your page has to download. In the 2025 Web Almanac, the annual report on the state of the web built from millions of real sites, found that images were the single biggest resource type by file size, with a median of roughly 1,059 KB of images on a home page. That’s more than the JavaScript, more than the fonts, more than anything else on the page. The whole median web page weighs about 2.5 MB on a phone, and images are the largest contributor.
They’re also usually the part of the page a visitor is waiting on. On something like three-quarters of pages, the largest element to finish loading is an image, often the big hero photo at the top.
Google has a name for the amount of time it takes to load the image on the page. It’s called Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, and it’s one of three scores Google groups together as Core Web Vitals, the company’s way of measuring whether a page feels fast and stable to a real person. Google’s “good” target for LCP is under 2.5 seconds. When your hero image is a 3 MB photo straight off a phone camera, that clock keeps running, and the visitor stares at a half-built page.
But Does Image Size Really Move Rankings?
This is where you should be skeptical of anyone selling image optimization as a ranking miracle. Core Web Vitals is a real Google ranking signal, but a deliberately small one. Google’s own Search team has described the speed score as “super lightweight compared to other ranking signals,” and John Mueller, one of Google’s most quoted Search voices, has said it’s “more than a tie-breaker, but it doesn’t replace relevance.” In plain terms, a faster page won’t outrank a more relevant one just for being faster. If your content doesn’t answer the question, no amount of image compression saves it.
So why bother? Because the ranking nudge is the smallest of the four payoffs. A slow, janky page loses visitors before they convert, and that’s real money in a business where you paid to get the click. A page that jumps around as it loads feels broken and erodes trust. Heavy images with no description never show up in Google Images, a search surface plenty of people still use to find products and local businesses. And, increasingly, the AI tools answering people’s questions can’t make sense of your visuals at all. The ranking signal is the cherry. The speed, the stability, the image-search traffic, and the AI legibility are the cake. Two small fixes improve all of it, so let’s get to them.
Fix 1 — Make Your Images Fast and Stable
This first fix has two halves that work together, setting explicit dimensions on every image and compressing the file into a modern format. The first stops your page from jumping around. The second stops it from crawling. Together they handle two of the three Core Web Vitals, and you can do both this week without touching code you don’t understand.
Step 1 — Set a Width and Height on Every Image
Give every image the correct width and a height so the browser knows how much space to save for it before it loads. When you skip this, the browser has no idea how tall that image will be, so it loads your text first, then the image pops in and shoves everything down the page. You’ve felt this as a reader. You go to tap a button and the page lurches, and now you’ve tapped the wrong thing. Google measures that lurching with a score called Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS, the third Core Web Vital, and its “good” target is under 0.1, which basically means almost no shifting.
The fix is mechanical. When an image has a width and height set, the browser does the math on its shape ahead of time, reserves exactly that much room, and drops the image into the held space when it arrives. Nothing moves. In most modern website builders and content systems, this happens automatically when you upload an image at its real size, which is one more reason not to paste in a giant original and let the page squeeze it down on the fly. The dimensions you set should match the size the image actually displays at, kept to its real aspect ratio, not an oversized number the page that has to shrink on every phone that loads it, and since Google judges your site on the mobile experience first, that smaller mobile size is the one that counts. If you’re on WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, or most other mainstream platforms, the dimensions are usually already in place, and the thing to check is that you haven’t stripped them out with a custom theme or a page builder. This is the cheaper of the two steps and the one that most directly kills the most jarring problem a visitor feels.
Step 2 — Compress and Resize to the Size You Display
Shrink every image to the size you actually display it, then save it in a modern format so the file is a fraction of the weight with no visible drop in quality. This is the part of the fix that moves your load speed, and it’s where the real bytes are. Two moves live inside it.
First, stop uploading originals. A photo off a modern phone can be 4,000 pixels wide and several megabytes. If you’re showing it in a 600-pixel-wide column, you’re making every visitor download something six times bigger than they’ll ever see. Resize it to roughly the width it appears at before you upload.
Second, change the format. The old default, JPEG, is no longer the efficient choice. Google’s own engineers built a newer format called WebP that runs about 25 to 34% smaller than a JPEG at the same visual quality, and it works in every current browser. There’s an even leaner format called AVIF that’s roughly half the size of a JPEG, though it’s worth keeping a WebP or JPEG version as a backup since support isn’t quite universal yet. You don’t need to know the internals. Free tools like Squoosh, made by Google’s own web team, or TinyPNG will convert and compress an image in your browser in a few seconds, and many website platforms now do it automatically if you turn the setting on. As a rough target, keep ordinary content images in the 150 to 200 KB range and large hero images no heavier than roughly 300 KB. When images are the heaviest thing on the page and the part visitors wait on, trimming a two-megabyte hero down to a couple hundred kilobytes is the single biggest speed win most sites have sitting untouched.

Fix 2 — Write Alt Text That Google and AI Can Read
Write a short, plain description of every meaningful image in its alt text, because that text is the only way Google and AI tools actually know what the picture shows. Alt text, short for alternative text, is a written description of an image that lives in the page’s code. A human visitor never sees it unless the image fails to load, but three audiences read it carefully, and they’re the three you care about for getting found.
How to Write Alt Text That Works
Describe what’s in the image, in normal language, as if you were telling someone over the phone who can’t see it. Google has said directly that it uses your alt text along with its own image-recognition technology and the words around the image to figure out the subject. Good alt text for a photo on a Lincoln Park boutique’s site isn’t “shoes” and it isn’t “best designer shoes Chicago boutique buy now.” It’s something like “tan leather ankle boots on a wooden shelf.” Specific, accurate, and readable. Google also warns against cramming keywords into alt text, which it treats as a spam signal, so resist the urge to stuff your city and service into every description.
A couple of small habits make this easier. Name your image files something descriptive before you upload, since “tan-leather-ankle-boots.jpg” gives Google a faint clue and “IMG_4032.jpg” gives it nothing. And skip alt text on purely decorative images, like a background swirl or a divider line, because describing those just adds noise for someone using a screen reader. That last point matters on its own. If your product photo’s only description is “chart.png” or nothing at all, the AI has nothing to work with and your visual may as well not exist. If it’s described clearly, the machine can connect that image to the question someone asked.
